how to improve mileage?

Just bought a used 1996 Trooper with 4ZD1 engine Carbed. it guzzles gas a lot.
what things should I do to improve the mileage. Thanks.

just fount out its 4ZE1 engine not 4ZD1

Ditch the snorkel as no matter how slippery it is a restriction so like driving with the choke on, change filters & fluids, tune engine, lube drive train with diligence, inflate tyres, reduce weight, drive more slowly, drive down hill.
