ruc weights. What do they mean

Im confused
The old bighorn and the wizard are assigned a ruc weight of 1 the new 3 door bighorn has a ruc weight of 2. I havnt a clue what these relate to and as all vehicles under 3.5 ton pay the same it doesnt really matter but every attempt to understand from the NZTA website hits a brick wall with ones head. Probably the real reason for my confusion

Just to confuse further some of our work cars have ruc weights that make no sense at all is Mondeo sedan ruc weight is a 4

My understanding is that the RUC system is based on vehicle Gross weight, IE with transport trucks the heavier you are the more you damage the road the more you pay....
There used to be a difference between the 1 ton and 2 ton rates, of about $1 per 1000 km. not much but the further up you go the larger the difference.
Really in practice it doesnt matter at the lower ends, except if you were pulled over by the Heavy vehicle inspection police and they weighted your truck. Apparently you can get a large fine if your vehicle gross weight is more than the sticker in the window. Having said that I have not seen a SUV or even a Commercial van pulled over by them.
I run my trucks on the 2 ton weight also though I understand that they weight about 2.2 ton unladen.

Ok to confuse further everything under 3.5 ton is charged at the same weight so why would a ubs55 bighorn and a wizard be a one a swb ubs69 bighorn be a 2 when best as I can tell all these are gvm 2500kg then a mondeo saloon a 4? Love to see that with 2500 on board

This confuses me too as a nissan patrol and my mu are different weights but cost the same.. the only thing different is the price of registration with the patrol being $150 more yet supposedly registered as the same class vehicle

you used to be able to buy 1 tonne road users but they cancelled it and just went to 2 tonne, you can change it when you buy road users

You dont cover many ks despite going a long way do you
They changed to this confusing system in 2012 and upped all the prices this year. Now its the same price all the way to 3.5 ton. Latest prices put the road users much the same as the fuel if you drive economically

I brought 7000km for my hilux last week and didnt think it wasnt to bad to be honest, think it was around $450, thats alot of ks, but does add up when i own so many diesels
